Welcome!

My name is Gordon Matthews. I’m a native speaker of British English, but I’ve lived in Germany for a total of more than 20 years altogether. I’ve been working freelance as a translator (from German and French into English) since 2015. Prior to that I was regularly copy-editing and proofreading for a small European NGO in Brussels, where I worked as office manager. As a proofreader I correct spelling errors and poor grammar. As a copy-editor I ensure that English text is not only free from errors, but also clear and readable.

I became fluent in German while doing voluntary service in a children’s home in Austria between leaving school in 1973 and starting at university in 1974. From 1990 to 2001 I lived in central Hesse (north of Frankfurt-am-Main). After completing a translation course at a language school in Giessen, I took on freelance work as a translator. I’ve lived for a total of two-and-a-half years in Brussels (1987, 2012/13, and 1014/15) and thereby gained a good knowledge of French. I returned to Germany in the summer of 2015, having completed a training course as a proofreader and copy-editor in London.

Whether you need a page or two to be copy-edited or proofread or a whole book to be translated, please get in touch. I’ll be happy to discuss costs etc. and give you a quote. As a freelance translator, I offer personal service, flexibility, and quality translation at competitive rates. I look forward to hearing from you.

My regular clients include the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Entwicklungsdienste (AGdD, Working Group of Development Agencies) and the European peace church network Church and Peace.
